Monday Morning Prophecy #71 – The Messiah Would Have an Ordinary Appearance

Last week, we looked at the prophecy in the Old Testament that the Messiah would do nothing to draw attention to himself. The Old Testament also tells us that he would be a man of ordinary appearance.

Old Testament Prophecy

He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. [Isaiah 53:2 NIV]

New Testament Fulfillment

Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? they asked. Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things? And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” [Matthew 13:54-57 NIV]

but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! [Philippians 2:7-8 NIV]
