2020-02-26 to 28 Pictures: Charleston, South Carolina

One of the few upsides of having to cancel our Spring Break trip last March at the onset of the pandemic is that we are "stuck" with a rather large voucher from one of those discount airlines. Last autumn, Tricia and I spent a weekend in Savannah, Georgia and had a...

A John 3:16 Craft for Kids

John 3:16 is one of the most well known and reassuring verses in the Bible. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.John 3:16 (NIV) The following is a little craft I threw...

2020-03-01 Pictures: Lyndsey’s College Signing Day

This afternoon Lyndsey made it official, signing her letter of intent to play college basketball for the Hiram College Terriers starting next year. While she made the decision and committed to Hiram before Christmas, she has been looking forward to this day since her...

2020-02-13 Pictures: Lyndsey’s 18th Birthday

I am little behind on posting photos. These are some of my favorites from a couple of weekends ago when we got a chance to celebrate Lyndsey's 18th birthday. It's hard to believe that my little girl is officially an adult. It was nice to have the family all back...

What is DOCTRINE?

Introduction I love working with kids, and I love teaching them hard concepts in ways they can understand. To that end, for years I have been working on a dictionary of theological terms for kids and teens. In sharing those definitions, there seemed no better place to...

If You Want It Done Right

In all likelihood, you know how the phrase ends: If you want it done right, DO IT YOURSELF! This is a bit of a mantra for me, and frankly, something that I struggle with daily both in leadership and in my Christian walk.  In theory, this is easy to accept. ...

What Does God Hate?

This is the little and humble post that started it all. I happened to be reading through my Bible, and this passage impacted me so much that I posted a little blurb about it on Facebook. That was July 28, 2008, and I've been writing and sharing ever since. (Maybe...

Story Behind the Song

This song was written by Chris Rice and released on Amy Grant’s 1999 Christmas Album, A Christmas to Remember. It was later released on Chris Rice’s 2005 EP entitled Merry Chris Rice. It has also been recorded by other artists including Michael W. Smith, Kathy Troccoli, Phillips, Craig & Dean and others.

Commentary & Analysis

This song tells its tale from the perspective of a world waiting for its Savior. A world a little more than 2,000 years ago, not entirely unlike our own waited for a Savior that would come in the form of a little baby in a manger.

Tears are falling, hearts are breaking
How we need to hear from God

No doubt countless thousands in our world today feel the same way, but we must not lose sight of the fact that our Savior has already come. He was born as a baby in that manger, lived a sinless life, died for our sins and was raised on the third day. Today, He is alive. And, one day, he will wipe away every tear. He is indeed the “perfect Son of God.”

Questions for Further Reflection / Devotion

  1. How does God’s promise to wipe away every in the future affect the way you live today?
  2. Take a minute to reflect on all of the desperate or hurting times that God has helped you out of this past year. How about the rest of your life?
  3. Had you been present at the first coming of Christ at Christmas, what do you think your reactions would have been?
  4. What do you think the second coming of Christ would be like?

Lyrics

Tears are falling, hearts are breaking
How we need to hear from God
You’ve been promised, we’ve been waiting
Welcome Holy Child
Welcome Holy Child

Hope that you don’t mind our manger
How I wish we would have known
But long awaited Holy Stranger
Make yourself at home
Please make yourself at home

Bring your peace into our violence
Bid our hungry souls be filled
Word now breaking Heaven’s silence
Welcome to our world
Welcome to our world

Fragile finger sent to heal us
Tender brow prepared for thorn
Tiny heart whose blood will save us
Unto us is born
Unto us is born

So wrap our injured flesh around You
Breathe our air and walk our sod
Rob our sin and make us holy
Perfect Son of God
Perfect Son of God
Welcome to our world
