Introduction
Last week we examined the prophecies that the Messiah would thirst at His death. The Old Testament tells us that, in reaction to that, the Messiah would be offered gall and vinegar.
Old Testament Prophecy
They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. [Psalm 69:21 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. [Matthew 27:34 NIV]
Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. [Mark 15:23 NIV]
The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar [Luke 23:36 NIV]
Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. [John 19:28-29 NIV]
