Introduction
Last week we looked at the prophecies in the Old Testament what predicted the killing of the Messiah. Those prophecies are very specific about the means of death as well. The Messiah would be crucified – a form of execution that wasn’t even invented until hundreds of years after the prophecies were made.
Old Testament Prophecy
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. [Psalm 22:14 NIV]
I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. [Psalm 22:17 NIV]
See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. [Isaiah 52:13 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. [Matthew 27:35 NIV]
And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. [Mark 15:24 NIV]
When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals–one on his right, the other on his left. [Luke 23:33 NIV]
Here they crucified him, and with him two others–one on each side and Jesus in the middle. [John 19:18 NIV]
The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. [John 19:32-33 NIV]
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. [John 19:34 NIV]
