Introduction
There are numerous prophecies in the Old Testament which tell specifically about the Messiah’s arrest and crucifixion. In this prophecy, we learn that the Messiah’s back would be lashed.
Old Testament Prophecy
I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. [Isaiah 50:6 NIV]
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. [Isaiah 53:5 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. [Matthew 27:26 NIV]
Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. [Mark 15:15 NIV]
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. [John 19:1 NIV]
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. [1 Peter 2:24 NIV]
