Introduction
One of the verses we looked at last week includes a specific prophecy that the Messiah’s followers would abandon Him at some point. Jesus’ famously points to this prophecy and tells His disciples that they will all abandon Him which they did that very night.
Old Testament Prophecy
Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. [Psalm 22:11 NIV]
Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. [Psalm 69:20 NIV]
"Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!" declares the LORD Almighty. "Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. [Zechariah 13:7 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ [Matthew 26:31 NIV]
