Introduction
The Old Testament includes numerous prophecies that tell us that the Messiah would come as both a servant and a messenger of God.
Old Testament Prophecy
“Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him
and he will bring justice to the nations. [Isaiah 42:1 NIV]
He said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.” [Isaiah 49:3 NIV]
See, my servant will act wisely;
he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. [Isaiah 52:13 NIV]
After the suffering of his soul,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied ;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities. [Isaiah 53:11 NIV]
“‘Listen, O high priest Joshua and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. [Zechariah 3:8 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. [Matthew 12:17-18 NIV]
“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. [John 4:34 NIV]
By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. [John 5:30 NIV]
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. [John 6:38 NIV]
Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. [John 6:57 NIV]
…but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.” [John 7:29 NIV]
But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. [John 8:16 NIV]
As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. [John 9:4 NIV]
For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. [John 12:49 NIV]
He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. [John 14:24 NIV]
I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. [John 17:4 NIV]
But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. [Galatians 4:4-5 NIV]
