Introduction
There are several references to the Messiah as a rock. In this prophecy, we are told that the Messiah would become a cornerstone or capstone.
Old Testament Prophecy
So this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who trusts will never be dismayed. [Isaiah 28:16 NIV]
From Judah will come the cornerstone,
from him the tent peg,
from him the battle bow,
from him every ruler. [Zechariah 10:4 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? [Matthew 21:42 NIV]
He is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. [Acts 4:11 NIV]
…built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. [Ephesians 2:20 NIV]
For in Scripture it says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him 6 For in Scripture it says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame. 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone, 8 and, A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. They stumble because they disobey the message–which is also what they were destined for. [1 Peter 2:6-8 NIV]
