Introduction
Last week we saw that the Messiah’s bones would not be broken. However, the Old Testament prophecy does tell us that the Messiah would be pierced.
Old Testament Prophecy
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. [Isaiah 53:5 NIV]
"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. [Zechariah 12:10 NIV]
Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet [Psalm 22:16 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. [Matthew 27:35 NIV]
It was the third hour when they crucified him. [Mark 15:25 NIV]
When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals–one on his right, the other on his left. [Luke 23:33 NIV]
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.” [John 19:34-37 NIV]
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were blocked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” [John 20:25-28 NIV]
