Ministry Conversation: Kidmin Is My “Other” Job [Kidmin Conference 2014]

I spend 40-50 hours per week in my other life as an accountant and CPA. Ministry, though my passion, has to be fit into those times between being at work, spending time with the family and tending to my own spiritual life. It isn’t an ideal situation, but then God doesn’t always put us in ideal situations. So, I was excited to attend this conversation about the challenges faced by others who essentially have two full times jobs – one they get paid for, and one that bring eternal rewards. Here are my notes from the conversation.

What is a challenge you are facing regarding kidmin being one of your other jobs?

  • Time
  • Resources
  • Balance
  • Guilt
  • Family
  • Knowing your limits
  • Networking
  • Out of the loop
  • Scheduling
  • No time to rejuvenate

What are some things that have helped with these challenges?

  • Get quiet and let God reprioritize
  • Learn how to ask for help
  • Retreats – Time Alone
  • Turn off electronics
  • Take time off when your kids are off school

What successes have you had regarding kidmin being your other job?

  • Having kids help
  • Seeing kids get saved
  • Teaching our own kids to serve

Conversation Description: Whether you’re bivocational (working two jobs) or part-time (paid or unpaid) staff, your challenges and opportunities are unique. How do you earn respect? How do you juggle it all? How do you manage so many priorities? Talk about it with these new friends.
