Introduction
The Messiah’s sacrificial death was no accident and it was not completed in contravention of God’s will. To the contrary, God the Father willed that the Son would bear the sin of man.
Old Testament Prophecy
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. [Isaiah 53:6 NIV]
Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. [Isaiah 53:10 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
He went away a second time and prayed, My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done. [Matthew 26:42 NIV]
Abba, Father, he said, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” [Mark 14:36 NIV]
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” [Luke 22:42 NIV]
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. [John 6:38 NIV]
Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” [John 18:11 NIV]
This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. [Acts 2:23 NIV]
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished–he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. [Romans 3:23-26 NIV]
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. [Romans 8:3-4 NIV]
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? [Romans 8:32 NIV]
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, [Galatians 1:3-4 NIV]
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. [1 John 4:10 NIV]
