Introduction
Continuing with the specific prophecies of the Messiah’s arrest, trial and crucifixion, we learn that the Messiah would be struck on the face.
Old Testament Prophecy
Just as there were many who were appalled at him – his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness- [Isaiah 52:14 NIV]
Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. [Lamentations 3:30 NIV]
Marshal your troops, O city of troops, for a siege is laid against us. They will strike Israel’s ruler on the cheek with a rod. [Micah 5:1 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?” [Matthew 26:67-68 NIV]
They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. [Matthew 27:30 NIV]
Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him. [Mark 14:65 NIV]
The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and demanded, Prophesy! Who hit you?” [Luke 22:63-64 NIV]
When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded. [John 18:22 NIV]
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, Hail, king of the Jews! And they struck him in the face. [John 19:1-3 NIV]
