Story Behind the Song

Written by Amy Grant and Chris Easton, “Christmas Lullaby” first appeared on Amy’s 1999 Christmas CD entitled A Christmas to Remember.

Commentary & Analysis

Titled “Christmas Lullaby,” this song is about a lot more than Christmas. This song is about the Saving power of Jesus Christ. In so many of our lives, we have spent time wandering – wandering aimlessly and fooling ourselves into believing that we have everything under control. Instead, God calls us to put our faith in Jesus Christ. With faith that His death on the cross paid the penalty we deserve for our sins, and with the assurance that He is our Lord and Savior, we are adopted into God’s family. Only then can we leave the “dark and lonely night” of self-reliance and enter the dwelling place of our God. What a glorious day it will be when we can live with God in heaven. Even now though, God works in our lives to “lead us home.”

Questions for Further Reflection / Devotion

  1. As Christians, we are foreigners in this land. Our real home is with God. How does that impact how you should live your life?
  2. What can you do this Christmas to be an ambassador for God in this foreign land?
  3. Talk to your family about a time in your life when you were traveling the “dark and lonely night.” How did Jesus lead you out of that?

Are you far away from home, this dark and lonely night?
Tell me what best would help to ease your mind
Someone to give direction for this unfamiliar road
Or one who says, "Follow me and I will lead you home"?

How beautiful, how precious the Savior of all
To love so completely, the loneliest soul
How gently, how tenderly He says to one and all
"Child, you can follow me and I will lead you home
Trust me and follow me and I will lead you home"

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever and love me I pray
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care
And take us to heaven to live with Thee there
Take us to Heaven to live with Thee there
