Introduction
In addition to being Judge, the Old Testament prophesies that the coming Messiah would fulfill the role of Prophet.
Old Testament Prophecy
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. [Deuteronomy 18:15 NIV]
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” The LORD said to me: “What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. [Deuteronomy 18:15-19 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” [Matthew 21:11 NIV]
They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet. [Matthew 21:46 NIV]
Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.” [Mark 6:15 NIV]
They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” [Luke 7:16 NIV]
In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day–for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! [Luke 13:33 NIV]
What things? he asked. About Jesus of Nazareth, they replied. He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. [Luke 24:19 NIV]
“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. [John 4:19 NIV]
After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” [John 6:14 NIV]
On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” [John 7:40 NIV]
Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.” [John 9:17 NIV]
For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. [John 12:49 NIV]
He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. [John 14:24 NIV]
…and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. [Acts 3:20-22 NIV]
