Who Else is Going to the Children’s Ministry Expo?

On the heels of missing the Orange Conference this year, I drowned my sorrows by booking my tickets and hotel for the Children’s Ministry Expo in Lexington, Kentucky.  The conference falls on a Thursday and Friday, so my wife and I are going to travel Thursday morning, and turn the event into a nice road trip and long weekend.

This year’s Children’s Ministry Expo is taking place July 15 & 16 at the Lexington Center in Lexington, Ky.  The Expo is put on by Kidz Blitz (Roger Fields) and is markedly different from other children’s ministry events.  The purpose of the event is to showcase vendors.  There are no formal breakout sessions or speakers as you might find at other conferences.  Instead, there will be over 66,000 square feet of vendors showing you what they can do for your ministry and, hopefully, engaging your imagination and creativity for children’s ministry.  At just $25 per person for admission to both days of the expo, the price is ridiculously affordable.  I did not look much into the cost for vendors, but I understand that it is also significantly cheaper than other conferences.  This should encourage a multitude of vendors.

In addition to the vendors, the Expo will feature a number of 20 Minute “Scoops” which are mini-workshops which will be conducted on the expo floor.  These will offer practical ideas and product information.  The schedule of Scoops is not available ahead of time and will be provided at the Expo.  By the way, you’ve got to love the fact that they gave these things a name that conjures up images of ice cream! 🙂  In addition to Scoops, the Expo will feature a series of 40 minute “Sit-Ins.”  These are open discussion led by children’s ministry experts on topics including:

  • Theming & Décor
  • Networking
  • Taking Risks
  • Family Ministry
  • Training
  • Recruiting
  • Creativity
  • Organization

At last count, the Children’s Ministry Expo website listed 79 exhibitors in a list which is sure to grow.  I am looking forward to checking out all of the exhibitors, but the ones that I am most excited about visiting include (in no particular order):

  1. Jim Wideman Ministries
  2. Yancy
  3. Go Fish
  4. CM Connect
  5. Amber  Sky Records
  6. Kidology
  7. Seeds Family Worship
  8. Children Desiring God
  9. Kidz Blitz Live
  10. Ministry-to-Children.com

In addition to discovering new ideas and getting a better feel for the resources which are out there, I am most looking forward to finally meeting some of you who I interact with online.  If you’re going, please leave a comment or drop me a line to let me know.  I would love to touch base with you at the expo!  Also, if you are familiar with the Lexington area, please let me know what else there is to do as my wife and I are hanging around after the Expo.  We are considering taking in the Creation Museum in nearby Petersberg, KY.  We have family in Cincinnati (and my wife lived there for a number of years before we met), so we’ve already taken in most of what Cinci has to offer.

  1. Wayne – I'm there but still don't know what to do with the booth!

    • Tony,

The nice thing is since you aren't selling anything, there isn't a whole lot of pressure. 🙂 I'm sure you'll come up with something great. Looking forward to finally meeting you in person!

  2. Wow! Engaging their imagination and creativity for children’s ministry is just wonderful, we are the parents we should take charge and lead them in the right direction under the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Come visit me athttp://www.ConcerningKids.com and let us talk more about raising strong healthy children in todays ever changing society.

  3. We'll be there too Wayne and look forward to connecting. And thanks for the note about the Creation Museum – always like to find something to see when I'm traveling and have wanted to visit there for awhile now. See you then!

  4. Hi Wayne! Yes – I'll be in Lexington. I'm doing a Sit-in on special needs ministry. I am toying with the idea of doing something along the lines of "How Special Needs will change children's ministry and church culture over the next 5 years"….still pondering (I welcome feedback from anyone!). Anyway, when I'm not doing the sit-in and discussion group, I'll be with Ryan, Tina & gang at the Kidzmatter booth.

Can't wait to meet you Wayne!
