MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyR0lwO-nXc

History

This song was written and performed by Go Fish and appears on their Christmas album called Snow which was released in 2006. We actually kicked off our Christmas Song Advent with a Go Fish song (Christmas With A Capital “C”) and it seems appropriate to end with this one which reminds us that Christmas may be about the birth of Christ, but in the end we must never lose sight of the cross!

Commentary & Analysis

This song isn’t as well known, but I couldn’t think of a better way to finish off this Christmas Carol Advent than with this song from Go Fish. This song reminds us, on Christmas Day, that this holiday is actually quite secondary to the death and resurrection of Christ. Over the last 25 days, we have looked at a number of songs celebrating the manger, the angels, the shepherds and the wise men. Those are an integral part of Christmas celebration, but we should never lose sight of the cross of Christ where God paid the penalty for our sins so that we could be reconciled to him forever. It’s about accepting him as our Lord and savior so that we can, through his death, be born again into the kingdom of God. While we celebrate a babe born in the straw, we must remember the stone that was rolled away to find an empty tomb “so we can have real life someday.” The second set of verses turns from the traditional, and biblical facets of Christmas, to remind us that the current trimmings (family, presents, snow, decorations and the feelings they all elicit), while nice are also not what Christmas is really about. No matter how much we enjoy Christmas, and we should, we have to remember that it is only the beginning of Christ’s time on earth, and it was the end of his time here that gives us the opportunity at eternal life.

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

Why do you think we, as Christians, spend so much more time and money celebrating Christmas rather than Easter?

How can you spend time focusing of the cross this Christmas?

How can you balance the joys of family and all the trimmings (which are not bad things) with the Biblical purpose of Christmas?

Many families read the Christmas story ever Christmas morning or some time during the Christmas season. What tradition can you start this year to shift some focus from Christmas Morning to the death, burial and resurrection of Christ?

“It’s about God’s love, Nailed to a tree, It’s about every drop of blood that flowed from Him when it should have been me.” I challenge you this Christmas – every time you look at the Christmas Tree in your house, remember the tree Jesus was nailed to and what he did for you and me!

Lyrics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKjBXV-KXBA

History

Silent Night was penned in German (Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) by the Austrian Priest Father Joseph Mohr. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, and the song was first performed in the Nikolaus-Kirche (Church of St. Nicholas) in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818.

Commentary & Analysis

This is one of my favorite Christmas Carols and one of my favorite songs of all time. Interestingly, the whole idea behind this song, a “silent night” is not addressed anywhere in the Bible. There is no indication of atmosphere when Christ was born. More likely, the phrase “silent night, holy night” is based on the nature of God based on passages like 1 Kings 19:11-12 when God showed himself to Elijah:

“And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.” [1 Kings 19:11-12 ESV]

And Psalm 46:10:

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” [Psalms 46:10 ESV]

Which indicate the calm nature of God. The author perhaps felt that given that, the night Christ was born must have been a “silent night.” The fact that Jesus was born of a virgin is attested to in Matthew 1:18 and Matthew 1:23 and is the fulfillment of prophecy from Isaiah 7:14. As for a “holy infant, so tender and mild,” there is no doubt that Jesus was holy. There is no information regarding the infancy of Jesus in the Bible and the idea that he was “tender and mild” is more likely a reference to the general nature of infants and the condescension of God when he chose to take on human flesh and some live amongst his creation.

In the second verse, “Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;” is all a reference to the appearance of angels to the shepherds outside of Bethlehem. That story is told in Luke 2:8-14.

The final verse includes both a wonderful summary of the role of Jesus – “Son of God, loves pure light” – and some biblical inaccuracies / creative license in “Radiant beams from thy holy face.” The Bible is clear that Jesus was the light and that men rejected the light:

“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” [John 3:18-21 ESV]

Jesus was the Son of God sent into this world as a baby on Christmas morning to shine God’s light on the world. That said, nowhere does the Bible indicate that the baby Jesus had a glow or beams of light literally came from him. This portion of the carol either represents beautiful poetic imagery or a misstatement of biblical truth. I prefer to think it is the former.

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

What do you think it was like the night that Christ was born?

Do you ever get so busy during the holiday season that you forget to slow down and enjoy the peace?

How had God shined the light of his love into your life this holiday season?

How do you interpret lines such as “Radiant beams from thy holy face” which have no clear scriptural support?

What is one thing you can on Christmas day to “be still” and reflect on God?

All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

History

“O Holy Night” was originally a French carol (“Cantique De Noel”) was penned as a poem in 1847 by Placide de Roguemaure based on his interpretation of what it would have been like to be present at the birth of Christ based on the account in the Gospel of Luke. The music was composed by Adolphe-Charles Adam. It

Commentary & Analysis

The first verse of this famous Christmas Carol capture the state of the world prior to the birth of Christ (“Long lay a world in sin and error pining”) and at the birth of Christ (“for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.”) I am always struck in the first verse of this song by the juxtaposition of the thrill of hope and a weary world. We live in a world tainted by sin that does not work the way God created it to work. We live in a world that, for the most part, rejects its creator. We live in a world of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, lie, cheating, stealing, death, tears, anguish and indescribable pain. I think weary captures the tenor of this world and those of us who live in it. We are worn out by the grind, by the pain, by the longing for something better. In a lonely manger, in a small town, without human fanfare, a small child was born. That child, Jesus, was the Son of God sent to absolve us of our sin by his death on the cross. That child was, and is, the hope of the world. The only appropriate response we can offer to the gift of a savior is to fall on our knees in worship and adoration – it was a holy night indeed!

The second verse of this song recounts some of the details of Jesus’ birth which we have addressed in a number of song throughout this month, but it also reminds us that God knows what we need. He knows our weaknesses and we need not hide them from him. Indeed, the Bible reminds us that he makes us strong through our weaknesses. He is, and should be, the source of our strength!

Finally, the third verse reminds us of a fundamental truth of the Bible – God is love (1 John 4:8). God is love, and God is the source of all love. God’s law is love – love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:30). As God loved us by send Jesus as our savior, all call this time of year, and throughout the year, is to love God and love others as God loved us!

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

Who, in your family, does not know the love of Christ? How can you go about sharing Christ’s love with them this season in a very tangible way?

What weaknesses do you have in your Christian walk? Do you try to hide those weaknesses from people or do you try to be transparent? What is something you can do to work through those weaknesses for God’s Glory?

What makes you weary? How can you find strength in Jesus in that weakness?

The second verse tells us to “Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!” Take some time today to actually get on your knees before God and pray. Tell him what’s on your mind, praise him for all he’s done, and tell him was you need. Remember, God knows what we need, so telling him about it is more about you than him. Meditate on how to cast your cares upon Jesus this Christmas season.

Holy means set apart. What tradition can you and your family start this year to preserve the Holy nature of Christmas?

Lyrics

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O’er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

History

This song based on the Hymn “Angels from the Realms of Glory” was written by Bebo Norman for his Christmas CD entitled Christmas…From The Realms of Glory. That CD was released in 2007.

Commentary & Analysis

This month, we have looked at Christmas from the standpoint of shepherds, wise men, Mary, and a spectator in Bethlehem, amongst others. This song tells the story of Christmas from heaven’s perspective. The first verse speaks to the angels from creation to proclaiming the Messiah’s birth. The chorus is a call to the only rightful response to the coming Messiah – one of worship. In the second verse, we see a heavenly view of the shepherds. Rather than focusing on the awe and wonder of the shepherds, this verse recounts what the shepherds were privileged to see – the very light of God come in infant form to live with his creation. The final verse looks forward to Christ’s second coming when his work shall finally be completed and his eternal kingdom established. This song places Christmas in its rightful position in God’s larger story from Genesis to Revelation.

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

Christmas as well Christ’s death and resurrection were planned by God before he ever created the world. If you have children, take some time to place Christmas in the larger story of God and his relationship with his creation this Christmas.

Many people list Jesus as the person they would most like to spend a dinner with. If you had the opportunity to walk and talk with Jesus, what would you ask him?

This song speaks of watching in both hope and fear. When you think of Jesus, do you feel both hope and fear? Do you feel one more than the other? Should you?

As you celebrate the initial coming of Christ this Christmas, spend some time meditating on his second coming.

What can you do on this Christmas to not just remember Christ and what he has done, but to worship him?

Lyrics

Angels from the realms of glory
Wing your flight o’er the earth.
Ye who sang creations story
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth.

Chorus
Come and worship, come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ the newborn King.

Shepherds in the fields abiding
Watching o’er your flocks by night.
God with man is now residing
Yonder shines the infant light

Chorus
Come and worship, come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ the newborn King.
(repeat)

Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear.
Suddenly the Lord descending
in His temple shall appear.

Chorus
Come and worship, come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ the newborn King.
(repeat)

History

Mary’s Boy Child was written by Jester Hairston in 1956 and recorded by Harry Belafonte that same year.

Commentary & Analysis

This one is a little more offbeat as Christmas songs go, but I love the very first line in that it reminds us of our source of all truth when it comes to Christmas. No matter what society tries to change the holiday into, not matter what fallacies have come to be accepted because of their inclusion in Christmas songs, no matter how many stories are written are about Santa Claus and his elves, the only real source of information on Christmas is the Bible – “..so the Holy Bible say.”

This song presents Christmas in its simplest terms, a baby (Jesus) was born in a manger in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph on Christmas Day. Through his life, and death, we are reconciled to God, conquer death and live forever in his presence. The angels announced the coming of this eternal King to lowly shepherds.

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

This song reminds us that the Baby Jesus was born in a manger because there was no room for him in the inn. Do you leave room in your heart for Jesus?

What is your view of the Bible? Do you only read and accept those parts which you find easy to accept, or do you believe that it is all true and inspired by God?

How important is the inerrancy of scripture to your faith?

This song proclaims that man will live forevermore because of Christmas day. Do you believe this? Was there another way for God to save mankind which would not have involved Jesus taking on human form and dying on the cross for our sins? If so, why did he choose this option? If not, why not?

This Christmas season, spend some time meditating on the saving work of Jesus Christ.

Lyrics

Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible say,
Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today,
And man will live forevermore, because of Christmas Day.

While shepherds watch their flocks by night, then see a bright new shining star,
then hear a choir sing a song, the music seemed to come from afar.

Now Joseph and his wife, Mary, come to Bethlehem that night,
and find no place to bear her child, not a single room was in sight.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today,
And man will live forevermore, because of Christmas Day.

By and by they found a little nook in a stable all forlorn,
and in a manger cold and dark, Mary’s little boy was born.

5 MORE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!

Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDgm87S0WxU

History

This carol is a traditional English Christmas Carol dating from the 18th century. It was first published in its current form in 1823.

Commentary & Analysis

This song reflects on three of the preeminent events that people think of when they think of Christmas. First, of course, is the birth of Christ. “Born is the King of Israel” is the final line of each and every verse. The first two verses discuss the angels’ appearance to the shepherds in the fields outside of Bethlehem to announce the birth of Jesus. Although this song is fairly faithful to the biblical account, there are a couple of items in the first couple of verse which are not in the original stories. First, there is no indication that it was a “cold winter’s night” on the night when Jesus was born. Although many of here in the west dream yearly of a “white Christmas,” the Bible gives no indication of the weather on that historical night. Secondly, although they may have seen it, the Bible does not indicate that the Shepherds noticed the star which later guided the wise men to Bethlehem.

The final three verses of the song deal with the wise men from the east that came to see Jesus. Although much has been made of the wise men that came to see Jesus, and numerous songs have been written about them, the entire biblical account of their visit is as follows:

“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.” [Matthew 2:1-12 ESV]

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

The wise men came to worship a King they had never met. When you think of Jesus, do you think of him more as the baby in the manger or King of the Universe?

The song also reminds us that the wise men followed the star wherever it went. Like Abraham who left his home without being told by God where he was sending him, the Bible is full of stories where God calls someone to do something but doesn’t give them full details of his plan. What are you being called to do by God that you are holding out on because you are waiting for all the details?

The song reminds us that the wise men fell down to worship Jesus upon seeing him. How can you show more reverence for Christ this Christmas season?

Much has been made throughout church history as to what the three gifts of the wise men might represent. Do you think they have symbolic meaning? If so, what?

Angels came to some of the lowest members of society (the shepherds) to announce the birth of Jesus. What can you do this Christmas to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who might not otherwise hear it?

Lyrics

The first Noel, the angel did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same star,
Three wise men came from country far;
To seek for a King was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew night to the northwest,
O’er Bethlehem it took its rest;
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three,
Full reverently upon their knee;
And offered there in his presence,
Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

History

Written by Chris Eaton, and performed by Amy Grant, this song first appeared on Amy Grant’s second Christmas album titled Home For Christmas released in 1992. On a personal note, it ranks as one of my favorite “contemporary” Christmas songs.

Commentary & Analysis

This song is written from the perspective of Mary. Mary was a young woman told by an angel that she would give birth to the Son of God. She was a young woman who traveled many miles on foot and donkey to travel to Bethlehem to be counted for the census. Although not based on the biblical account, this song is an interesting account of what it might have been like. Starting with the question as to why she might have been the one chosen and moving on the fear that Mary must have felt being the mother of Christ to questioning whether she was the right person for the job, this songs reflects on the range of emotion which Mary may have gone through ultimately crying out for God to be with her. Interestingly, the only thing the Bible tells us about Mary’s reaction was in her immediate response “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

Reflect on what Mary must have gone through knowing that she was carrying the Son of God. What emotions do you think she felt?

The song postulates that Mary may have waited in silent prayer. What in your life do you need to pray about and wait patiently for God?

Do you pray for God to make you holy?

At the end of the song, Mary offers all that she is to God. What part of you are you holding back from God?

In light of Luke 11:27-28, why do you think Christians throughout the ages have been fascinated by Mary?

Lyrics

I have traveled many moonless nights
Cold and weary with a babe inside
And I wonder what I’ve done
Holy Father, you have come
And chosen me now to carry your son

I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now, Be with me now

[CHORUS]
Breath of Heaven, Hold me together
Be forever near me, Breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven, Lighten my darkness
Pour over me, your holiness for you are holy
Breath of Heaven

Do you wonder as you watch my face
If a wiser one, should have had my place
But I offer-all I am
For the mercy-of your plan
Help me be strong. Help me be. Help me

[CHORUS]

7 MORE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!

Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbdvo019mgM

History

This song was written by Charles Wesley and first appeared in print in 1739. The opening verse was originally written as “Hark! how all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings.” The version sung today is different from Wesley original tune mainly due to alterations made by George Whitfield who worked with Wesley. This song is considered one of the “Great Four” Anglican Hymns.

Commentary & Analysis

This song covers many of the same items as previous songs in this Christmas Carol Advent, and rather than regurgitate many of the same themes covered with those other songs, I thought it might be fun to simply go through this entire song and add verse references and support to the lyrics shown below. So, with just one more week until Christmas, here we go…

(NOTE: where not scripture reference follows a line, the scripture reference on the following line encompasses both lines).

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

Look up the verses reflected below. See if you can find more verses to support each of the statements.

Jesus Christ was fully human and fully God. Take some time to meditate on that truth. How do you wrap your head around that concept? What happens when you start to focus on the deity of Christ to the detriment of his humanity? What happens when you start to focus on the humanity of Christ to the detriment of his deity?

The Bible says that Jesus is the representation of God in human form. In other words, when we see Jesus, we see the true nature of God. Read through the Gospel of Mark and consider what that truth means.

When we accept Christ as Lord of our lives, we are forever joined to him – he in us and us in him. What does that mean to you?

This song refers to “Bruise in us the serpent’s head.” Take some time to research Genesis 3:15 which is the first prophecy of Jesus found in the Bible.

Lyrics

Hark! the herald angels sing (Luke 2:10)

History

Babe in the Straw is performed by the Christian group Caedmon’s Call. Like Manger Throne (featured earlier in the month), this song first appeared on the Christmas album titled City On a Hill: It’s Christmas Time released in 2002.

Commentary & Analysis

This song is written from the perspective of someone observing a fragile, innocent, little baby lying in a manger and wondering how that baby could really be the Son of God sent to change the world. This is a struggle felt ‘round the world by billions of people over the last 2,000 years as they look upon Jesus and wonder, “could it really be?”

The first verse asks, “Have you come to redeem us?” Has this little baby, asleep in manager, really been sent by God to redeem his people? It seems so unlikely, but in the currency of God who works through the unimaginable, there was really nothing to be surprised by. The second verse answers the question posed in the first verse. This is the “Prince of the Universe” that the prophets of old had spoken of who would come to save God’s people. The third verse is more of a prayer recognizing that we will lose our way and asking Christ to always guide us back to him. In our lives, when we start to wonder, we should ask God to draw us back to Bethlehem, draw us back to the cross, draw us to the empty tomb – Draw us to Jesus! The Bible assures us that if we draw near to him, he will draw near to us. (James 4:8)

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

Take a minute to ponder what your reaction might have been had you been told that a little baby lying in a manager would be the Savior of the World. Do you think it would have been all that different than the one presented in this song?

This song speaks both of God’s mercy and his grace. God’s mercy is not giving us what we do deserve, and God’s grace is giving us what we don’t deserve. List out some examples of both God’s mercy and grace on a sheet of paper.

Gather your family this Christmas season and discuss your testimony. How did you come to Christ? How has your life changed? Prior to your conversation did you ever “look at Jesus” and wonder, could it really be true? What convinced you?

The song reminds us that Jesus is the “light of truth.” Think of one person to whom you could reflect the light of Jesus. How is that person? What can you do to reflect the light of Christ?

What is one thing you can do this Christmas to draw closer to God? What areas of your life is God calling you to leave at the cross of Christ?

Lyrics

Who is this child,
Asleep in a manger?
The heavens are bright
The stable’s so cold
On this holy night,
Have you come to redeem us?
Little child in the straw
Little child in the straw

Who is this babe?
Prince of the universe
A donkey is braying
Angels are singing
The prophets did say
You would come to redeem the world
Little babe in the straw
Save us all

And if we lose sight of your sweet face
At the birth of grace, at the birth of grace
Light of truth shine like Bethlehem’s star
Lead us to where you are, show us who you are

Merciful one
Lover of every soul
The Father’s own Son
Emmanuel
Yes, we believe,
You are able to heal us
Noel, noel,
Save us all

Save us tonight (repeat)

9 MORE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!

Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd02dhWBV3w

History

“Go Tell It on the Mountain” was written as an African-American spiritual song by John W. Work. The carol dates back to the 1860’s and has been performed by a number of gospel performers over the years.

Commentary & Analysis

This song starts with the scene of the shepherds watching their flocks outside Bethlehem when suddenly a light from heaven appeared and angels came to tell them of the birth of their savior and ours (Luke 2:8-15). The chorus of the song rings out with joy about the good news of Jesus Christ and echoes the feelings that innumerable people have had upon learning what Jesus Christ has done for us – “Go, Tell It On the Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere.” We are called to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who do not know him (Matthew 28:19-20).

The third verse recounts the story of Jesus’ birth in a manger (Luke 2:13). It also reminds us that lying in that humble manger was the savior of all mankind (Acts 16:31). The fourth verse reminds us of the lostness we felt prior to accepting Jesus as Lord. Finally, the fifth verse reminds us that we should never be proud in our standing as Christians. We are called by God out of his grace, and the only appropriate response to that is one of humility.

Questions for further Reflection / Devotion

The following questions are meant for your reflection and or devotion. Feel free to meditate on them, discuss them with your family or others or post your responses here. I would love to hear from you.

Reflect on the time before you knew Jesus. What was your life like?

How has your life changed since finding Jesus Christ? How is your life different today than it was prior to knowing Christ?

When you thinking of your own salvation story, do you think in terms of “finding God” or “God calling you?” What does this tell you about your own view of salvation?

What do you think is meant by the line “He made me a watchman, Upon the city wall?”

What can you do this Christmas season to “Go tell it on the mountain?” Who can you tell the Good News of Jesus Christ to?

Lyrics

While shepherds kept their watching
Over silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens,
There shone a holy light:

CHORUS
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo! above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Saviour’s birth:

CHORUS

Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation,
That blessed Christmas morn:

CHORUS

When I was a seeker,
I sought both night and day;
I asked the Lord to help me,
And He showed me the way:

CHORUS

He made me a watchman
Upon the city wall,
And if I am a Christian,
I am the least of all.

CHORUS
