Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Today was a Wacky Wednesday. At first I thought “I Am Not Going To Get Up Today!” But, then I realized it was a Great Day For Up! So, I dragged myself out of bed and made some Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast. I went out to the barn to see if Horton had Hatched the Egg yet. I wanted some fruit, but all I could find was Ten Apples Up On Top and I couldn’t reach them, but the Scrambled Eggs were Super!. I grabbed the morning paper to enjoy while I ate and discovered that I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! I read a human interest story about Bartholomew and the Oobleck, a fashion article about The King’s Stilts, an article about the economy dealing with The great Butter Battle, and a self-help article entitled Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?

Then, it was time to figure out what to do with my day. I called my friends, Daisy-Head Mayzie, Bartholomew Cubbins, and Gerald McBoing Boing. We decided to head to the zoo. On my way to the zoo I found Fox in my Socks and A Wocket in My Pocket. We strolled past McElligot’s Pool, and for just a minute I thought to myself, “I Wish That I Had Duck Feet.” It wasn’t all peaches and cream though. I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew. I thought we were going in the right direction, but I was having Hunches in Bunches and they just weren’t panning out. At one point we passed a Cat in the Hat, and five minutes later he was back, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. It was like we were walking in circles. When we finally got there, I announced that “If I Ran the Zoo, I would make it easier to find.” Gerald told us that he was so hungry that “I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today if I don’t get some food soon.” We spent hours at the zoo seeing everything they had to offer from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish in the aquarium to Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose, Yertle the Turtle and On Beyond Zebra! We even checked out the endangered animal exhibits including The Lorax and The Sneetches.

When I went home that evening and reflected on the day, all I could think about were the words of a good friend, “Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?” He was right. I had to remind myself to “Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!” As I write My Book About Me in life, I always want to remember that you are Only Old Once, and when you set your mind to it, Oh, the Thinks You Can Think and Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss. Thanks for the memories!

Back in the day, I used to run two websites dedicated to the work of Dr. Seuss. One was called ESeuss, and the other SeussStore. I have turned my efforts and my attention to other things these days, but Dr. Seuss still holds a special place in my heart. His whimsy, his talent, and his love for kids are evident in all that he did. As I read “There’s A Wocket in my Pocket” with my three year old son last night (something that has become a nightly ritual), I reflected on how many parents and children have spent quality time together solely because Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) had a passion for writing kids’ books.
