Monday Morning Prophecy #8 – Born of a Virgin

cross-picture

Last week we looked at amazing prophecies regarding the timing of the coming of the Messiah.  This week will look at another aspect of Jesus’ amazing birth.  This week we will examine the amazing prophecy made by Isaiah that the Messiah would be born of a virgin.

Isaiah lived 650 to 750 years before Christ, but his book of prophecy is often times called “The Fifth Gospel” because it includes so much information about the birth, life and death of the coming Messiah roughly 700 years later.  In Isaiah 7:14, he writes:

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” [Isaiah 7:14]

Matthew and Luke both recount the story of the miraculous conception of Jesus: Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #7 – The Timing of the Messiah’s Birth

cross-picture

This morning’s Monday Morning Prophecy is a little bit different.  Last week, we looked at the prophecy that the Messiah would be called from the womb. This morning we will look at a couple of Old Testament passages which generally indicate the timing of the coming of the Messiah.  While neither verse indicates that exact date the Messiah would come, they both provide some general framework for the approximate timing.  Let’s have a look at the first verse from Malachi 3:1:

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.  [Malachi 3:1]

This verse indicates that the Messiah would visit the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem.  That temple was destroyed by the Roman General Titus in 70 A.D.  Accordingly, this verse indicates that the Messiah had to be born before the temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. or he would not have been able to visit the temple before it’s destruction.  Furthermore, John 2 (amongst other passages) tells us that Jesus did indeed visit his temple: Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #6 – Called from the Womb

cross-pictureIn our first series of Monday Morning Prophecies we started rather abruptly with the betrayal of Jesus.  I did this, in part, because I find the level of detail amazing when it comes to prophecies about Jesus from the Old Testament down to the level of the price paid for the betrayal.  For the next few weeks, we are going to go back to the beginning and look at prophecies related to the birth and early years of our Lord Jesus Christ.  As with the prophecies related to the betrayal of Jesus, I think you will see clearly that the prophecies related to his birth were also obviously beyond his control.

To begin our look at the prophecies related to his birth, let’s look first at the prophecy that the Messiah would be called from the womb.  Many people in our society can’t figure out what they should do with their lives well into their 30’s or even later.  Jesus was called by God for a purpose before he was ever born.  This is no surprise really given that God had the plan for our salvation before he ever created the world.  Let’s have a look at Isaiah 49:1: Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #5 – The office of the betrayer

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we take one final look at the prophecies related to the betrayal of Jesus. Last week we looked what happened to Judas Iscariot after he betrayed Jesus. This week, we will look at what happen to his office of as Apostle to Jesus following his death.

Our Old Testament verse is the same as last week, written by King David hundreds of years before the birth, death and resurrection of Christ.  In Psalm 109, we read:

“6 Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin!
8 May his days be few;
may another take his office!” [Psalm 109:6-8]

Prompted by the Holy Spirit, King David reveals the another would take the office of the betrayer following his betrayal of Jesus and death. Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #4 – The fate of the betrayer

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we continue our look at the betrayal of Jesus. Last week we looked what happened to the money paid to Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus.  This week, we will look at what the Old Testament said would become of Judas following the betrayal.

In Psalm 109, we read:

“6 Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin!
8 May his days be few;
may another take his office!” [Psalm 109:6-8]

This Old testament verse written hundreds of years before the birth and betrayal of Jesus Christ implies that the betrayer would have a short life. Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #3 – The use of the betrayal money

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we continue our look at the betrayal of Jesus. Last week we looked at the price paid to Judas Iscariot to betray the Lord.  This week, we look at what ultimately happened to that money.

You will recall that last week we said that Zechariah, writing sometime around 500 B.C., prophecied that Judas would be given 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus.  In the very next verse, he predicts what would happen to the money:

“And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”-the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.” [Zechariah 11:13]

Zechariah is clear.  The money would be thrown into the temple to the potter.  So, let’s see what the New Testament says actually happened: Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #2 – The Price of Betrayal

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we continue our look at the betrayal of Jesus.  Last week we looked at the prophecy regarding who would betray Jesus.  This week will look at how the price of that betrayal was precisely predicted in the old testament hundreds of years before the birth of Christ.

Writing sometime around 500 B.C., the prophet Zechariah recorded the following:

“I told them, ‘If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.” [Zecharaiah 11:12]
