Monday Morning Prophecy #52 – The Messiah Would Fulfill the Role of King

Introduction

Over the last several weeks, we have looked at several roles of the Messiah including Judge, Prophet and Priest. The Old Testament also tells us that the coming Messiah would be King.

Old Testament Prophecy

The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he comes to whom it belongs
and the obedience of the nations is his. [Genesis 49:10 NIV]

“I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob;
a scepter will rise out of Israel.
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls of all the sons of Sheth [Numbers 24:17 NIV]

Monday Morning Prophecy #51 – The Messiah Would Fulfill the Role of Priest

Welcome to a very special Thursday edition of Monday Morning Prophecy. I know that it sounds a little odd, but when you get the opportunity to have Reggie Joiner publish an article on your site on a Monday morning, you don’t say no. :) Tuesday we had the opportunity to participate in the exciting launch of the What’s In The Bible Curriculum, and Wednesday we introduced a great new resource. So, here we are….enjoy!

Introduction

In addition to Judge and Prophet, the Old Testament also prophecies that the coming Messiah would fulfill the role of Priest.

Old Testament Prophecy

The LORD has sworn
and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.” [Psalm 110:4 NIV]

Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD. It is he who will build the temple of the LORD , and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ [Zechariah 6:12-13 NIV]

Monday Morning Prophecy #50 – The Messiah Would Fulfill the Role of Prophet

Introduction

In addition to being Judge, the Old Testament prophesies that the coming Messiah would fulfill the role of Prophet.

Old Testament Prophecy

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. [Deuteronomy 18:15 NIV]

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” The LORD said to me: “What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. [Deuteronomy 18:15-19 NIV]

One of the important roles of Jesus is that he serves as the intercessor between his people and God the Father. The Old Testament prophesies that this would be one role of the Messiah.

Old Testament Prophecy

Truth is nowhere to be found,
and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.
The LORD looked and was displeased
that there was no justice.

Monday Morning Prophecy #47 – The Messiah Would be God’s Servant and Messenger

Introduction

The Old Testament includes numerous prophecies that tell us that the Messiah would come as both a servant and a messenger of God.

Old Testament Prophecy

“Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him
and he will bring justice to the nations. [Isaiah 42:1 NIV]

He said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.” [Isaiah 49:3 NIV]

See, my servant will act wisely;
he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. [Isaiah 52:13 NIV]
