Monday Morning Prophecy #5 – The office of the betrayer

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we take one final look at the prophecies related to the betrayal of Jesus. Last week we looked what happened to Judas Iscariot after he betrayed Jesus. This week, we will look at what happen to his office of as Apostle to Jesus following his death.

Our Old Testament verse is the same as last week, written by King David hundreds of years before the birth, death and resurrection of Christ.  In Psalm 109, we read:

“6 Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin!
8 May his days be few;
may another take his office!” [Psalm 109:6-8]

Prompted by the Holy Spirit, King David reveals the another would take the office of the betrayer following his betrayal of Jesus and death. Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #4 – The fate of the betrayer

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we continue our look at the betrayal of Jesus. Last week we looked what happened to the money paid to Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus.  This week, we will look at what the Old Testament said would become of Judas following the betrayal.

In Psalm 109, we read:

“6 Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin!
8 May his days be few;
may another take his office!” [Psalm 109:6-8]

This Old testament verse written hundreds of years before the birth and betrayal of Jesus Christ implies that the betrayer would have a short life. Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #3 – The use of the betrayal money

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we continue our look at the betrayal of Jesus. Last week we looked at the price paid to Judas Iscariot to betray the Lord.  This week, we look at what ultimately happened to that money.

You will recall that last week we said that Zechariah, writing sometime around 500 B.C., prophecied that Judas would be given 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus.  In the very next verse, he predicts what would happen to the money:

“And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”-the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.” [Zechariah 11:13]

Zechariah is clear.  The money would be thrown into the temple to the potter.  So, let’s see what the New Testament says actually happened: Continue Reading…

Monday Morning Prophecy #2 – The Price of Betrayal

cross-pictureIn this week’s installment of Monday Morning Prophecy, we continue our look at the betrayal of Jesus.  Last week we looked at the prophecy regarding who would betray Jesus.  This week will look at how the price of that betrayal was precisely predicted in the old testament hundreds of years before the birth of Christ.

Writing sometime around 500 B.C., the prophet Zechariah recorded the following:

“I told them, ‘If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.” [Zecharaiah 11:12]

Monday Morning Prophecy #1 – Jesus would be betrayed by a friend

cross-pictureI am starting a new feature on this blog today.  I call it “Monday Morning Prophecy.”  It was the prophecies in the Bible, and specifically the prophecies of the coming Messiah, that convinced me that I could trust the Bible and forced me to examine the claims contained therein.  So, my plan is to, with some regularity, look at many of the Old Testament prophecies of the coming Messiah and their fulfillment in Jesus Christ of Nazareth.  Unless something else comes up, I’ve designated Monday for these posts, thus the title – “Monday Morning Prophecy.”  I’ve added a number to each post to keep track of where we are.  As the number of prophecies continues to build, I think you will see the overwhelming evidence for the inspiration of the Bible in its Messianic prophecies alone.

This morning we will look at one of the specific prophecies regarding the events leading up to the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.  Despite one claim generally made by critics – that Jesus orchestrated his life to be the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies – this morning’s prophecy is a clear example of an Old Testament prophecy whose fulfillment was outside the realm of Jesus’ control.

Psalm 119 – The Word of God

I am currently working on another blog entry called simply “Why I Believe the Bible.”  However, in my daily reading today, I came to Psalm 119 again.  It is the longer single chapter in the Bible and longer than several books of the Bible.  It is also the single greatest summary of the the attributes and benefits of God’s word.  So, before I get into Why I Believe the Bible, it makes sense to take a couple of minutes to look at God’s word.

Psalm 119 says numerous times that we should meditate on God’s Word and store it in our hearts.  Part of that includes examining what this Psalm says about God’s Word.

Psalm 119 uses several different terms for God’s word.  My ESV Study Bible (which is an excellent resource which I highly recommend) includes a nifty little table which distinguishes the meaning of each:
