Children Desiring God – A Summary of the 2009 National Conference

It seems like everybody and their brother was at the Orange Conference this week, and I have enjoyed reading the tweets, blogs and more from people there this week.  It turns out their is another Children’s Ministry conference going on this week.  Children Desiring God 2009 National Conference: Oh Glorious God is also going on this weekend.  Jared Kennedy over at SojournKids.com is doing a great job blogging the various sessions.  Some of the speakers include John Piper, Paul David Tripp, Bruce Ware and David Michael.  I’m not all that familiar with Mr. Michael, but I have read the other three, and given what i have read, I imagine this must be a great event.  Since this conference seems to be getting less attention in the blogosphere, I thought I would provide a summary of some of the key points from Mr. Kennedy’s blog posts as well as John Piper’s. My point here is just to provide some interesting insights from what has been written thus far about the conference.  Here’s what has been going on in a bullet point format.

UPDATE (05/20/09): Children Desiring God has now posted the audio from plenary speakers at that event on their website here. You can listen to or download the following sessions:

These are definately worth listening to!  The Children Desiring God website currently says that the audio from the break out sessions will be posted soon.  Once those are available, I will let you know.

Old Testament…New Ideas (Jelly Telly’s Books of the Bible Series)

The folks over at Jelly Telly are working their way through a kids sized explanation of the books of the Old Testament.  For those who don’t know, Jelly Telly is Phil Vischer’s (creator of Veggietales) new home.  These videos use both The Fabulous Bentley Brothers and Sunday School Lady to teach us about the books of the Old Testament.  The videos are great for kids, children’s ministry and adults.  Thanks to Tony Kummer over at Ministry-To-Children.com for turning me on to these.  Here’s Genesis through Nehemiah:

The Scary Prospect of Working with Children

I feel as though I have been called by God to work with Children. I love working with kids! Every time I have started helping out in the Children’s Ministry at church on a part time basis, it seems that it has quickly grown into a weekly schedule (or even more often). When we switched churches several years ago, I ignored that call for a couple of years, and I found myself feeling more and more empty and distant from God. Last fall, through a series of circumstances, I ended up volunteering once again in Children’s Ministry working with kids from age 3 (pre-school) through about 7 (1st grade).

I take that work very seriously. I believe working with children is one of God’s greatest, and perhaps most neglected, mission fields, and I take my role very seriously both as a Children’s Ministry volunteer and as the father of four children. The seriousness of the situation was reaffirmed for me recently when I read the results of a poll conducted by Barna Research. That study looked at the number of people in our nation with a “Biblical Worldview.” A Biblical worldview was defined based on responses to 6 basic questions: Continue Reading…

From the mouth of babes…

I was talking to my son Jacob tonight about God.  For those of you who don’t know, Jacob will be eight years old in a couple of weeks.  I was trying to put into practice some of the things I am learning from reading Tedd Tripp’s book “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” a synopsis of which I have started on this blog.  So, we were talking about the heart being the wellspring of life and how in all our decisions, our focus should always be on how we will glorify God in any given situation.  Jacob explained to me, as he is prone to doing, that he was about to change the subject.  What he said next astounded me and caused my heart to well up with emotion.  He said:

“Dad, it’s kind of like this.  It’s like God is standing at the gates of heaven and wants us to come in, but no matter what he does, we keep trying to run the other way, and the only thing in that direction is hell.  But, Jesus keeps running to catch us and get us turned back around towards heaven.”

When I asked him where he had heard that, he told me that he had been reading his Bible and that was just the way it seemed to him that people were.  I was speechless.  in 60 words, he had encapsulated the gospel and the Christian life better than I ever could have.  Which reminds me of another Jacob story from this past fall.  He and I were alone together in the car driving to or from one of our kids’ many activities.  He asked me what I thought he should be when he grew up.  For the last couple of years he has always said that he wanted to be a pastor when he grows up, so I asked him if he still wanted to do that.  He told me probably not.  When I asked why, he explained that he wanted a job where he could “help people and tell them about Jesus.”  My pastor got a kick out of that one. :)

The Ballad of Matthew’s Begats

Over at Russell Moore’s blog this past weekend, he posted an article entitled Andrew Peterson’s “The Good Confession.” The article is about the impact that the song had on Dr. Moore while he was on vacation.  I am always interested in finding new artists, so I opened Itunes and looked him up.  I enjoy his music and downloaded several of his CDs, but there was one song from his Christmas CD that really struck me a fun, so I thought I would share it with you.

The name of the song is The Ballad of Matthew’s Begats.  The song cleverly recounts the genealogy of Christ from the gospel of Matthew.  Here are the lyrics: Continue Reading…
