Our Home Is Like A Little Church (A Review)

This book originally published by Sojourn Community Church, in Louisville, Kentucky, was written by Lindsay Blair and Bobby Giles and illustrated by Tessa James.  It was originally published under the title “Pastor Daddy,” but has since been picked up by Christian Focus Publications and republished under it’s new name Our Home Is Like A Little Church.

In the introduction to the book Jared Kennedy, the Children’s Minister at Sojourn Community Church writes,

“God intended the home to be the front line of ministry to children – not the Sunday school or public church gathering alone.  The church and the home are partners.”

Join the Campaign to Revive the CMEdge Podcast!

Since I started actively blogging and networking online with other children’s ministry professionals,  I have come to admire and appreciate the work and resources of many in this field.  A couple of individuals who I have come to admire immensely for their willingness to share their insights and wisdom with others in the children’s ministry community are Kenny Conley and Sam Luce.  Their blogs are included in a list of very short blogs for which I make sure to read each and every article which is published.

A couple of months ago, I was listening to one of the very few good children’s ministry podcasts available out there today when a random thought popped into my head.  The thought went something like this:

“Sam Luce and Kenny Conley ought to do a podcast.  I think that would be a great blessing to the kidmin community.”

Volunteer and Bivocational Children’s Ministry

The purpose of this article is to introduce an exciting new resource for those of us who volunteer in children’s ministry or work in a capacity as a bivocational children’s minister.  Before I introduce you to the resource though, I want to tell you a little bit about why I started it and what I hope we can accomplish through it.

I have been blogging (well, blogging regularly) for a little over a year now.  In that time, my blog has changed names once and locations twice, the focus of the blog has shifted from more general articles to primarily reflecting my passion for working in children’s ministry, and I have started to contribute articles to Ministry-to-Children.com in addition to maintaining this blog.  Perhaps that is part of the reason that there seems to be some confusion about what I do.  When people ask me that age old question “What do you do?” I tell them that I work with kids because that is where my passion is.  In all actuality though, that is not my full-time profession.  I am volunteer in our church’s children’s ministry.  During the week, I work full time (sometimes a little bit more) at my other job.  For forty-plus house a week, I am a partner in a small CPA firm that specializes in litigation support, forensic accounting and business valuations.  Like so many who work in children’s ministry, the time I get to spend on children’s ministry is relegated to nights and weekends.  I sometimes think that if God had called me earlier in my life, he may have called me to full time ministry to children and families, but he did not.  He may still call me that at some point in the future, but for now I am exactly where he put me.

I am not alone.  I have learned a number of thing from the last year of blogging and networking with other children’s ministry minded individuals on the internet.  First, they are a very generous and open group of individuals who are willing to share their experience and ideas with almost anyone.  Secondly, while there are a large number of full time children’s pastors who are passionately devoted to children’s ministry, there is also an extremely large group of volunteers and unpaid children’s ministers.  This group includes volunteers, bivocational children’s pastors and those dedicated to more than one ministry within the church including children’s ministries.  Though not full-time, and oftentimes unpaid, their passion for children is second to none.  This is the group that I fall into.

As a group, we share some things in common.  While our passion for children’s ministry is as strong as anyone, the time we have available to prepare for and minister to kids is limited.  Many of us have trouble attending conferences and doing in-person networking because of time limitations and constraints imposed by our other jobs.  We often feel torn between our God given calling to work with kids and the other things which we must get done.  To that end, I felt it was appropriate to start a place when such individuals can gather, network with one another, share ideas, share concerns and generally sharpen one another.

An Orange 2010 Blogging Extravaganza – UPDATE

A week ago Thursday and Friday was the 2010 Orange Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Sponsored by the ReThink Group, the conference focuses on all things children’s and family ministry. Over 4,000 people involved in children’s ministry showed up and learned from the conference. Unfortunately, I wasn’t one of them. I was grateful that many of those who did attend shared what they learned through twitter and their blogs. On Saturday, I posted My Favorite Tweets from Orange 2010, in this post I shared all the blog posts related to Orange 2010 from the last week or so. Last Monday, I posted an initial listing of blog posts from Orange 2010. However, as the week progressed, a number of bloggers started to post additional thoughts and notes from Orange as they unwound after the conference. So, I decided to do an update this week. The posts included in last week’s update are in a normal font below.

Who Else is Going to the Children’s Ministry Expo?

On the heels of missing the Orange Conference this year, I drowned my sorrows by booking my tickets and hotel for the Children’s Ministry Expo in Lexington, Kentucky.  The conference falls on a Thursday and Friday, so my wife and I are going to travel Thursday morning, and turn the event into a nice road trip and long weekend.

This year’s Children’s Ministry Expo is taking place July 15 & 16 at the Lexington Center in Lexington, Ky.  The Expo is put on by Kidz Blitz (Roger Fields) and is markedly different from other children’s ministry events.  The purpose of the event is to showcase vendors.  There are no formal breakout sessions or speakers as you might find at other conferences.  Instead, there will be over 66,000 square feet of vendors showing you what they can do for your ministry and, hopefully, engaging your imagination and creativity for children’s ministry.  At just $25 per person for admission to both days of the expo, the price is ridiculously affordable.  I did not look much into the cost for vendors, but I understand that it is also significantly cheaper than other conferences.  This should encourage a multitude of vendors.

In addition to the vendors, the Expo will feature a number of 20 Minute “Scoops” which are mini-workshops which will be conducted on the expo floor.  These will offer practical ideas and product information.  The schedule of Scoops is not available ahead of time and will be provided at the Expo.  By the way, you’ve got to love the fact that they gave these things a name that conjures up images of ice cream! :)   In addition to Scoops, the Expo will feature a series of 40 minute “Sit-Ins.”  These are open discussion led by children’s ministry experts on topics including: Continue Reading…
