Background

There is a great new album coming out today for younger kids called Rain for Roots.  All of the songs on the album were written by Sally Lloyd-Jones  the author behind one of my favorite books ever – The Jesus Storybook Bible.  The music is performed by Sandra McCracken, Ellie Holcomb, Flo Paris and Katy Bowser.  You can buy the album starting today at RainforRoots.com or http://www.bandcamp.com/rainforroots.  If you use the special code “inthemiddle” when you place your order, you can save 10%.  The digital release also includes a pdf file of a booklet with chords.

My Review

There is lots of good music out their for kids that is Biblically based, and I would add this CD to that mix.  It is biblically sound, and it does a great job of putting your focus exactly where it should be – on God!  The folksy sound of the album is very different than most of what is out there, and I think it is a welcome addition.  The sound theology means you can safely use this album to teach your children biblical truth.  The soft sounds means you can also put it on at night and let them fall asleep to the sound of God’s truth.  I would recommend this album to people with younger children and those who do preschool ministry.  If that describes you, don’t miss your chance to win a free copy at the bottom of this article.

Most of the songs (particularly the Old Testament related songs) follow the same formula – a series of questions about a Bible story answered by God did.  It’s an important message – no doubt, and perhaps it sets a pattern for young kids to think “Who did ____? God did!”  I think that’s valuable.  The New Testament songs follow a pattern of questions followed by the answer “His name is Jesus.”  Again, this is an important truth.  However from the standpoint of listening to these songs over and over again (something us parents do frequently), it can get a little tiresome.  That said, I do appreciate the effort to put God firmly at the center of this album.

Who Is This Album For?

This album would be best for younger kids – preschool and earlier.  I think children in the 2-3 age range might like it best.  Though some of the tunes are catchy and even older children might find themselves singing them.

A Song-By-Song Review

God Makes Everything: “Yes little one.  Yes it’s true. God made them all, and God made you.”  That is the clear message of this song.

Doxology: This short little song may be may favorite on the album.  It is an a cappella doxology of praise to God.  There is just something tender and endearing about this song, and I love the idea of engaging even very young kids in genuine worship of God.

Moses: The message of this song is that God will care for us the same way He took care of Moses.  I do have to say that I listened to the Noah song before this one, and they sound all most too much alike.  I think in some ways this reinforces the message that God is control (which I love).  On the other hand, they sound almost alike.

Noah: I love this song about Noah. Unlike most other stories of Noah which focus on bunches of cute animals and Noah’s obedience, the focus of this song is on all that God did for Noah. The song goes one step further in connecting that protection of Noah to the protection that God offers us in our own lives.

David Beats Goliath: God helped David to beat Goliath.  The message of this song is that God will also help “a little child like you.”

God Saves Daniel: God heard Daniel and helped him not to be afraid.  This song does not follow the predictable pattern of God did something for an Old Testament character, and He will do it for you too.

Jesus is Born: This song sets out who Jesus is and why He came to earth – “to be with you.”

Jesus Stops A Storm: Based on the story of Jesus calming the storm, this song reminds kids that He will answer when they call.

Jesus Loves Zaccheus: When the song started “Zaccheus was…” I was certain this was going to be another rendition of the popular children’s “wee little man tune.”  Instead, this song is actually a nice little song to remind kids that Jesus loves them.  It is one of the more upbeat songs on the album.

Jesus Loves Little Children: This song screamed lullaby to me.  The message is that God made everything, but you are more important to Him than all of that.

Jesus is Alive: This song encourages kids to celebrate the fact that Jesus is alive!

ABOUT THE ALBUM

One of my favorite artists, Yancy is at it again with her latest release called “Little Praise Party, Happy Day Everyday!”  This album of worship songs for preschoolers had me up and dancing when I listened to it with my kids.  From four all the way up to eleven, all of my kids loved this album from start to finish.  In addition to having some great worship songs for younger kids, this album also include songs to help preschoolers celebrate specific days like Birthdays, Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.

This release is available on CD as well as a Home DVD which includes 11 songs with animated music videos.  There is also a Church DVD which includes all 11 videos plus the soundtracks for all songs and mpeg type files to import into your presentation software.

REVIEW OF SONGS ON THE ALBUM

Brand New Day…Based on the verse “This is the Day the Lord has made” this song encourages kids to thank God for the days in their lives.  It encourages kids to get involved with motions and words.  This is easily one of my favorite songs on the album.

Shout!…This catchy song encourages kids to “Shout Out” that they love Jesus and tell other people about it.  A great song to teach young kids about sharing their faith.

Go!…This missions oriented song encourages kids to “Go” and tell His story to others.

Love One Another…This song teaches basic biblical principals like loving one another and be kind to each other.  It is chocked full of scripture references to plant in your young child’s heart.

Hosanna Rock…Hosanna…Ho…Ho…Hosanna is a catch that you won’t soon get out of your head after listening to this song (and I mean that in a great way).  This is a great worship song for kids with active worship (clap your hands, wave your arms, play the drums, etc.) built right in to engage your preschoolers.

One, Two, Three…A song to remind kids that Christ died for us and rose again on the third day.  This song will turn your focus to Jesus whether you’re 3 or 103.

The Springtime Song…A perfect song for this time of year, The Springtime Song even includes a reference to an Easter Egg (gasp!).  The important part is that it reminds us that the most important thing to remember is that Jesus is alive and He loves us.  This would be an awesome song to use in your ministry at Easter time or anytime!

The Dog Song…This is a great preschool song that compares our relationship with Jesus to “an old hound dog.”  It sounds out there I know, but it really is a catchy song, and any song that gets a room full of preschoolers barking like a dog is a keeper in my books.

Happy Birthday To You…Tired of the same old birthday song?  Check out this ramped up version from Yancy that is sure to please!

Bye, Bye, Bye…This song reminds kids to say goodbye to their fears because God is always with us.

I Like To…Get your kids moving as they jump for joy because Jesus loves us!

Don’t Be A Turkey…I knew this one would be a hit with my own kids before I ever turned it on, and sure enough the first time I played it for them we had to listen to it for about an hour non-stop.  Something seemed familiar about the voice on this song, so I looked it up, and sure enough it was written and performed by Yancy’s dad – Jim Wideman.

God Is Good To Me…This song of praise helps kids to remember that God is good to us and encourages them to give thanks for that.

Away In A Manger…This album wouldn’t be complete without a traditional Christmas song for preschoolers.

It’s Christmastime…This upbeat Christmas song is classic Yancy.  It will get you moving and grooving at Christmastime!

Love One Another (Lullaby Mix)…This song just about put me to sleep…which is a good thing given that it is the “Lullaby Mix.”  Seriously though, the beauty of Yancy’s voice is captured in this toned down version of Love One Another.

This coming Thursday, September 22, 2011 is the first day to register for Orange Conference 2012.  The Conference will be help April 25-27, 2012 in Duluth, GA and will feature an awesome lineup of speakers and great breakout sessions.  As an added benefit (not really, but it sounds good), I am doing everything in my power to finally make it there this year!  It’s hard to tell this far in advance, but I’d put my odds at about 80-90% that I’ll be able to pull it off this year.  Much more to come throughout the week here about the Orange Conference, but this morning I just wanted to give you the heads up.

The CMX preconference runs from 6:00 – 10:00 PM on July 6th.  So, we are going to get together from roughly 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the food court in the arena where CMX is being held.  So, if you’re coming in early, make plans to join us.  There is no invitation necessary, no agenda and nothing other than a chance to get together with other like-minded people, talk children’s ministry, make some new friends, reacquaint with old friends and just have a good time!  I know I’ll be there, and I hope you can make it too – the more the merrier!

• CMX will be held July 7, 2001 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM in Lexington, Kentucky at The Lexington Center (adjacent to Rupp Arena).
• The cost for the entire conference is only……..$25.  That’s right – that’s no typo.  It’s only $25 dollars.  You and a team of 10 people can go to CMX for less than the cost of one ticket to most other children’s ministry conferences.
• CMX is the brainchild of Roger Fields and the remainder of the Kidz Blitz team.
• A CMX Pre-Conference will be held from 6:00 – 10:00 PM on July 6, 2011.  The pre-conference will include all of the exhibitors but no presentations.
• CMX includes over 75 exhibitors showing off products encompassing all of your children’s ministry needs.
• Exhibitors will be conducting a variety of 20 minute Scoops highlighting how their products can help you in your ministry.
• On Thursday, there will be “Sit-Ins” from some of the nations best known experts in children’s ministries.  These sit-ins are designed to help you take your ministry deeper and will be presented in three different Tracks.  There is a Leadership Track, A Children’s Ministry Basics Track and a Special Needs Track.
• Speakers will include Greg Baird, Dr. Alyssa Barnes, Tina Bryson, Michael Chanley, Jeremy Collins, Coach D, Ken Dovey, Amy Fenton Lee, Roger Fields, Jenny Funderburke, Katie Garvert, Dale Hudson, Tony Kummer, Jim Marshall, Gina McClain, Jolene Philo, Karen Rhodes, Michelle Romain, Justyn Smith, Jim Wideman and Yancy.
• This year will also include a special exhibition of a Kidz Blitz FX Live Experience at 11:00 AM on July 7th.

1. I’ve been on “hiatus” for almost six months now which hasn’t kept me from writing the occasional aritcle; and

I won’t go into all the details, again, of my research into Children of Divorce but needless to say I have spent hours and hours online searching out articles and authoritative literature.  Last week, I decided I need to find a way to organize it and produce a bibliography.  I was lucky enough to find Zotero.  The Zotero website describes the program as:

…a free, easy-to-use tool to help youcollect, organize, cite, and share your research sources. It lives right where you do your work—in the web browser itself.

That’s right, Zotero integrates directly into Firefox.  You simply click a button and enter any information you want to keep track of related to citing the document and your set.  Zotero offers templates for all kinds of documents including:

• Case
• Conference Paper
• Dictionary Entry
• Document
• E-mail
• Encyclopedia Article
• Forum Post
• Instant Message
• Interview
• Journal Articles
• Letter

You can generate a complete bibliography, cite individual resources (with the word processor plugin), keep a copy of pdf files or snapshots of webpages with the associated reference, sync your references so that you can use Zotero on multiple computers, create different libraries, and so much more.  I’ve only been using it for seven days now, but I’ve got over 300 articles indexed and streamlines my research process as I go forward.

Zotero is fully searchable and can also be used to keep track of web pages and notes you want for future reference.  I am just scratching the surface, but I think the possibilities are endless.

Zotero integrates seamlessly into Firefox.  There is also a stand alone version which works with Google Chrome or Safari.  A plug in for Internet Explorer is also in the works.  The Zotero homepage includes fairly comprehensive documentation and support forums.  All that is pretty amazing for a free resource!

Several months back here on Dad in the  Middle, I reviewed the book Spiritual Parenting by Michelle Anthony.  In that review, I wrote:

This is not a book about controlling our children’s behavior so that we are not embarrassed or inconvenienced by their behavior (a very man-centered approach to parenting) it is about parenting in a way which brings honor and glory to God and set our kids on a spiritual path towards God.  Ms. Anthony describes her own goals for passing on a transforming faith to her kids:

• a faith in which kids would know and hear God’s voice;
• a faith in which they would desire to obey God; and
• a faith in which they would obey God not by their own power but by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Now, the same principles that served as the basis of that ground breaking book have been gathered together into a DVD Curriculum that you can share with the parents in your church.  This six session DVD set will equip and empower parents to nurture their children’s faith and create an environment conducive to helping your kids have “God Encounters” in their everyday life.

What I Liked

As was evident from my review of the book, I love the theory and the theology behind this work.  I said that the book was a must read for all Christian parents, and I believe that all parents could benefit from this DVD series.  As a church children’s ministry, you would do your congregation a great service by offering this curriculum to the parents in your church.

The presentations are easy to follow and allow time for personal interactions between the participants to allow the parents in your church to build relationships that are sure to help them in their parenting adventures.  Michelle Anthony is engaging and clearly passionate about helping parents raise this children with a biblical worldview.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this DVD series to church leaders, parents and anyone else interested in raising the next generation of spiritual champions.

What I Didn’t Like

Frankly, there wasn’t much.  I found some of the sessions to be a little less focused than I might I have liked, but by the time each was over, I was surprised how quickly the time had passed.

Leader 2 Leader (Jim Wideman)

I can’t think of anyone who has influenced me more through their writings and presentations than Jim Wideman.  If there is one blog that I look forward to reading more than any other, it is this one.  Whether Jim is talking about leadership or volunteers or parenting or (hopefully soon) grandparenting, I soak it all up and am blessed by every entry.  Brother Jim, I know, had been a mentor to thousands of people engaged in children’s ministry, and I eternally grateful for his heart for those who serve kids.

Lemon Lime Kids (Amy Dolan)

Amy Dolan is one of the nicest most unassuming people I have come across in the online kidmin community.  She is a gifted thinker, presenter, and writer and covers topics as diverse as leadership, creating better meeting environments and non-traditional families.  Her passion and her drive are evident in everything that she does.  Plus, she wrote our very first guest post on Kidmin1124, and we couldn’t be more grateful for that.

Kidmin1124 (Me and a bunch of other people)

Kidmin1124 grew out of my passion for equipping volunteers, but it is so much more than me.  We have a team of 16 writers (all volunteer and bi-vocational) who are equally passionate about reaching volunteers and those who lead them.  We haven’t been around for very long, but I have been personally blessed to have the opportunity to serve alongside some wonderful people and, hopefully, to be a blessing to others in the kidmin community.

Roger Fields

I like Roger Fields.  I’ve never met him, but from his writings and blog posts I feel like I know him.  I’m pretty sure we could sit down over a drink and have a great conversation.  Whether Roger is demonstrating his intellectual sense of humor or diving deep into the hard discussions surrounding children’s ministry, his insights will get you thinking and likely spur you to action.  Plus he seems to like lists, and you’ve got to love a guy who likes lists!

Kidologist.com (Karl Bastian)

Karl is the granddaddy of all kidmin when it comes to internet presence.  I’m pretty sure his first children’s ministry site was hosted on a hacked pentagon computer when he was eight.  Regardless of how it all started, he been at it a long time.  I haven’t had the chance to meet Karl in person yet (though I hope to rectify that soon), but I am glad that I have had the chance to interact with him some online.  I appreciate his drive to equip those who serve kids and relate to his passion for calling fathers out to be better dads.

Kidmin360.com (Greg Baird)

Despite besting me in a fantasy football league this past year, I still have a lot of admiration for Greg.  He has a great supporter in terms of getting the word out about Kidmin1124, and I always look forward to seeing what he has to say next.  His articles tend to be concise and to the point, but they always address issues of great importance.  Many times when I am reading his blog, it feels like a “How To” manual for children’s ministry.  He also coordinated one of the best series of the past year in his Future of Kidmin Series.

Justyn Smith

With all of his kids, it’s amazing that Justyn still finds time to blog, but somehow he does.  And, we are all better off because of it.  Whether he is addressing mediocrity in children’s ministry (as he is in his current series) or the branding of the children’s ministry at his new church, the one thing I noticed about Justyn’s posts is that there is always a nugget to take out of each article even if you think it doesn’t relate specifically to you.

Orange Leaders

Orange Leaders is another collaborative blog like Kidmin1124.  It brings together some of the most well known names in the world of children’s ministry who support the notion of orange – that the church and families working together can have a greater impact on kids than either working alone.  The articles are always top notched, and I have become acquainted with a number of new bloggers by first seeing their posts on the Orange Leaders blog.

Commander Bill Gunter

As far as I can tell, Commander Bill Gunter is the most knowledgeable person in the world about Awana.  While many of his posts deal directly with Awana, there is also plenty there that can, and should, be applied to children’s ministry in general.  Bill is a passionate bi-vocational children’s pastor who takes time to share his wisdom with the community.  He is also a regular contributor to Kidmin1124.

Sam Luce

Sam Luce and Kenny Conley in may ways blazed the trail in kidmin blogging.  They were doing it back before most people were, and they were two of the first blogs I discovered when I started searching.  In my mind they are inseparably linked. Both blogs offer the wealth and wisdom of experience from their authors.  Sam and Kenny both write on a wide variety of topics from technology to theological issues to the nuts and bolts of children’s ministry.  Both blogs are clearly in my “must read” list.

Dad In The Middle (Me again)

I am amazed and humbled that Dad in the Middle even made it to this round.  Despite all the other places where I blog, Dad in the Middle is still “my baby.”  Despite my partial hiatus from blogging, I can’t wait to get back to Dad in the Middle soon.  The fact that enough people thought enough of the blog to vote it into the second round means a lot to me!

About the Children’s Department (Lynda Freeman)

If I’m being honest, this is the newest blog in the group of 16 to me.  I didn’t really discover About the Children’s Department until a few months back.  I “met” Lynda online in the forums and chat room of CMConnect.org.  She always had an answer or some insight to share, and I thought to myself, “I wonder if she has a blog.”  Let’s just say, I wasn’t disappointed when I found it!

Small Town Kidmin (Jared Massey)

Like many people, I found Jared through an article that Kenny Conley wrote.  I found out later that Kenny was prompted to write that letter because Jared had taken the initiative to call him up with some questions.  That is the kind of guy Jared is.  He doesn’t like it when people talk about his age, but when I say he is young it is a badge of honor.  Rarely have I met someone as passionate about their ministry as Jared.  Even more rarely have I met someone that passionate who isn’t even in full-time vocational ministry.  Never have I met someone so passionate with a full-time non-ministry job who is also that young.  Jared is a deep thinker and constantly looking for ways to improve his ministry and that is evident in his writing.  Like Commander Bill, I am also partial to Jared because he is a fellow writer at Kidmin1124.  In fact, when I floated the vision for Kidmin1124, Jared was the very first one to jump on board.  For that, I am forever grateful.

Free CM Stuff (Andy Johnson)

What else can I say about Andy – he gives away free stuff.  I think his blog is one of the single best sources for kidmin who are trying to stretch budget dollars (and who isn’t?).  I have also thoroughly enjoyed all of the campaigning Andy has done this year for the competition.

Children’s Ministry Online (Kenny Conley)

I don’t want to give Children’s Ministry Online short shrift.  It is one of the premiere blogs out there today, and I am an avid reader.  You can find out more about my admiration for this blog under Sam Luce above.

West Coast CM (Anthony Prince)

Whenever I go to Anthony Blog, I always imagine him sitting on the beach in a lounge chair writing his posts – it must be the name of the blog.  That said, his articles are packed with information and insight.  I have always been a fan, but I remember the day (I think it was a weekend, but I might be wrong) when I turned on my computer and read a heart felt post about the death of one of his friends.  That kind of openness and transparency is hard to achieve and one of the many reasons I follow West Coast CM.

There you have it – 16 great blogs that you need to check out.  Vote if you’re so inclined, but you owe it to yourself to at least check out these blogs!

There were so many great blogs in this division in particular that I really wrestled with who to vote for.  Kidmin1124 was easy for me.  I started the site with some great people.  I am still as passionate about the mission of the site as I was the day I started it, and I would like to think I would vote for it regardless of whether or not I was involved with it.  Jim Wideman was also an easy choice.  Through his books and his blogs and so much more, he has had a tremendous and lasting impact on my life both in my work in children’s ministry and, more importantly, as a father.  I knew of Roger from Cold Water Café long before I ever started following blogs.  I relate to his humor and his passion so much that I hardly ever read one of his articles without thinking “I wish I could I write like that!”  In addition to Amy being one of the nicest people I’ve ever interacted with, her blog is so chocked full of practical information that I had to give Lemon Lime Kids one of my votes.

This and the West Region were probably the toughest one for me to call.  I came down to five blogs that I “had to” vote for in the Southwest.  In the end, I had to vote for Growing Kids Ministry and Small Town Kidmin because Lindsey and Jared are collaborators over at Kidmin1124.com and their blogs are awesome.  I had to vote for The Inclusive Church because Amy Fenton Lee rocks and I have learned so much about something I knew so little about from her.  That left me with the battle between Children’s Ministry Online and Jonathan (aka Jeremy) Cliff.  Kenny’s was one of the first children’s ministry blogs I ever stumbled upon and remains one of my favorites to this day.  In the end though, I went with Jonathan because he has a special tree, and how do you not vote for a guy with a special tree?

From the very name of the book “Big God Story,” I liked the focus of this book.  It is not a book about a bunch of historical guys who did awesome things, it is a book about how God has worked throughout history to accomplish his plan.  The first words of the book summarize its intent:

This is not just any story.  It is a true story, full of mysterious people and secret plans and last-second escapes.  It’s God’s Big Story, and every part tells us about His promise to love us.

This is a book that every parent should read to their children.  It is a review and an outline and a story and a starting point for a deeper review and study of the Bible.  It is a framework that presents the meta-narrative of the Bible in a way kids can get.  It will remind them of stories they have already heard and prompt them to ask questions about stories which are referenced that they might not fully know.  It is the perfect way to get kids interested in, and excited about, the Bible.  Most importantly though, this book keeps the main thing the main thing.  This is a book about God.  It’s about God’s plan and God’s work and God’s grace, and those themes are presented throughout the book.

As I do with most books I review, I subjected it to the most extreme test I know.  That “what do my kids think about it” test.  My seven year old daughter took the book and read it herself.  Her response, “it was good.”  That might not seem like a rousing review, but she is a very discerning reader.  My three year old made me read it to him over and over again.  Each time through he recalls a little more and asks even more questions.  I love a book which is great for my older kids to read on their own and also captivating when read to a pre-schooler.

I would definitely recommend this book to any parent and to anyone interested in giving kids a solid foundation in biblical truth and the story of God as presented in the Bible.  This is definitely not a “read it once and put it back on the shelf” type book.  It is a resource we will go back to time and time again.

There is also a great companion site at http://www.davidccook.com/BooksKids/biggodstory/ which provides even more insight into the book including things like story backgrounds, word definitions, conversation starters and activities for a number of the stories included in the book.  These will be an additional great resource for parents who want to use the book to go deeper with their kids.
