Introduction
The Old Testament also tells us that the coming Messiah would proclaim Himself the fulfillment of prophecy.
Old Testament Prophecy
Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. Then I said, "Here I am, I have come- it is written about me in the scroll. I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." [Psalm 40:6-8 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
Introduction
If the Messiah had simply come and died, that would have been insufficient. It was His resurrection that conquered sin and death for us, and the Old Testament predicted His resurrection as well.

I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. [Psalm 16:8-10 NIV]

Last week we looked at how Christ would conquer sin and death. This week we look at the prophecies that state that the Messiah would also defeat Satan.
Old Testament Prophecy

In His death, and resurrection, the Messiah would once for all conquer sin and death.

Introduction
Following His death and resurrection, the prophecies of the Old Testament make it clear that the Messiah would ascend to Heaven.
Old Testament Prophecy
When you ascended on high, you led captives in your train; you received gifts from men, even from the rebellious- that you, O LORD God, might dwell there [Psalm 68:18 NIV]
Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know [Proverbs 30:4 NIV]
Introduction
The purpose of the Messiah’s coming, and eventual death, was to be the salvation of all who would believe in Him.
Old Testament Prophecy
By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. [Isaiah 53:8 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
Introduction
In terms of timing, certain passages of the Old Testament give clues as the timing of the coming Messiah. In today’s passage, we learn the Messiah would die before the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed.
Old Testament Prophecy
After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. [Daniel 9:26 NIV]
