Introduction
Following His death and resurrection, the prophecies of the Old Testament make it clear that the Messiah would ascend to Heaven.
Old Testament Prophecy
When you ascended on high, you led captives in your train; you received gifts from men, even from the rebellious- that you, O LORD God, might dwell there [Psalm 68:18 NIV]
Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know [Proverbs 30:4 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. [Mark 16:19 NIV]
While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. [Luke 24:51 NIV]
No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven–the Son of Man. [John 3:13 NIV]
After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” [Acts 1:9-11 NIV]
This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.” [Ephesians 4:8 NIV]
