Introduction
The Old Testament prophesies that the Messiah would thirst prior to His death.
Old Testament Prophecy
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death [Psalm 22:15 NIV]
They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. [Psalm 69:21 NIV]
New Testament Fulfillment
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. [Matthew 27:48-50 NIV]
One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down, he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. [Mark 15:36-37 NIV]
Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” [John 19:28 NIV]
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. [John 19:30 NIV]
