2020-02-26 to 28 Pictures: Charleston, South Carolina

One of the few upsides of having to cancel our Spring Break trip last March at the onset of the pandemic is that we are "stuck" with a rather large voucher from one of those discount airlines. Last autumn, Tricia and I spent a weekend in Savannah, Georgia and had a...

A John 3:16 Craft for Kids

2020-02-13 Pictures: Lyndsey’s 18th Birthday

I am little behind on posting photos. These are some of my favorites from a couple of weekends ago when we got a chance to celebrate Lyndsey's 18th birthday. It's hard to believe that my little girl is officially an adult. It was nice to have the family all back...

What is DOCTRINE?

Introduction I love working with kids, and I love teaching them hard concepts in ways they can understand. To that end, for years I have been working on a dictionary of theological terms for kids and teens. In sharing those definitions, there seemed no better place to...

If You Want It Done Right

In all likelihood, you know how the phrase ends: If you want it done right, DO IT YOURSELF! This is a bit of a mantra for me, and frankly, something that I struggle with daily both in leadership and in my Christian walk.  In theory, this is easy to accept. ...

What Does God Hate?

This is the little and humble post that started it all. I happened to be reading through my Bible, and this passage impacted me so much that I posted a little blurb about it on Facebook. That was July 28, 2008, and I've been writing and sharing ever since. (Maybe...

Monday Morning Prophecy #52 – The Messiah Would Fulfill the Role of King

cross-picture

Introduction

Over the last several weeks, we have looked at several roles of the Messiah including Judge, Prophet and Priest. The Old Testament also tells us that the coming Messiah would be King.

Old Testament Prophecy

The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he comes to whom it belongs
and the obedience of the nations is his. [Genesis 49:10 NIV]

“I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob;
a scepter will rise out of Israel.
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls of all the sons of Sheth [Numbers 24:17 NIV]

Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered.
He will thunder against them from heaven;
the LORD will judge the ends of the earth.

“He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.” [1 Samuel 2:10 NIV]

“I have installed my King
on Zion, my holy hill.” [Psalm 2:6 NIV]

“The days are coming,” declares the LORD ,
“when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land. [Jeremiah 23:5 NIV]

Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD . It is he who will build the temple of the LORD , and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ [Zechariah 6:12-13 NIV]

New Testament Fulfillment

…and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” [Matthew 2:2 NIV]

“Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” [Matthew 21:5 NIV]

Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied. [Matthew 27:11 NIV]

Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. [Matthew 27:37 NIV]

“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied. [Mark 15:2 NIV]

Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? asked Pilate, [Mark 15:9 NIV]

“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them. [Mark 15:12 NIV]

and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” [Luke 1:33 NIV]

When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” [Luke 19:37-38 NIV]

Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” [Luke 19:38 NIV]

So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied. [Luke 23:3 NIV]

Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” [John 1:49 NIV]

The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!” [John 12:12-13 NIV]

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?” Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.” “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” [John 18:33-37 NIV]

“Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews. [John 19:14 NIV]

They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings–and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.” [Revelation 17:14 NIV]

On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. [Revelation 19:16 NIV]
