Phil,

Thanks for the input. My kids loved it at that age (early elementary and preschool). I don't think they grasped the whole thing, but I'm glad Phil Vischer (and others) are making this available to kids of all ages!

Hey Wayne,
My take on this series is a good one. I at first too had a bit of a let down as I watched it for the first time. My only issue is that this is not for pre-schoolers. I would not even show it to kids in first or second grades. It losses them and quick.

Hey Wayne..

I do think there is room for some non-essential doctrines to be interpreted differently in the Bible, the problem is the creation account is very specific and the only way we would ever consider the other view is if we push it on the Bible. If we didn't have the non-proven theory of evolution, no one would ever interpret the creation account to happen in millions of years. How can we push a scientific theory into the Bible when the Bible has shown science to be wrong time and again?

I really appreciate your blog and all you do... Don't mean to be negative, just sharing my thoughts... :-)

Doug,

Don't you think that there is some room for interpretation in the Creation account? I think it is important that we teach our kids that their are different views on issues like creation, and I felt like the treatment was very fair.

I agree with Michele... I was pretty disappointed with this section. I really liked the video up to this point. If it's called what's in the Bible, then I would expect to get the Bible's view on creation and not what some people think.

Michele,

Thanks so much for your comment. For what it is worth, I wouldn't let that one comment detract from the remainder of the series. I did note it in my review:

This segment covers some deep theological principals like the fact that God is neither male or female. There are some evolutionary undertones to this particular explanation which concerned me a little bit until Phil explained that many Christians disagree on the issue of the age of the earth in the “Tricky Bits With Phil” segment which acknowledges the differences in people’s opinions about the Bible. I appreciate the willingness of this series to directly tackle controversial aspects of the Bible in an informative way.

Whether I agree or disagree with their assessment, I thought they did a good job covering the controversy. There clearly is disagreement on this issue in the Christian community, and I am grateful that they were courageous enough to tackle it head on in the video. I want my kids to question their faith and question their understanding of the Bible. I believe that it can stand up to that questioning and ultimately produces a stronger faith than simply accepting what we've been told. My job as a parent and a children's ministry worker is to encourage kids to ask those questions and then help them to process through the information to arrive at an answer. If all I do is feed them my interpretations than I am simply trying to force my faith upon them and not allowing them to find their own faith in our Lord and Savior.

If the presentation were entirely one sided, I would be a lot more concerned than if all sides are presented and children are left to draw their own conclusions. My prayer is that segments like this will lead to God honoring - faith building conversations.

By the way, I purchased the second DVD and watched it and liked it as well. I have not had a chance to buy the third DVD yet.

I hope this helps. Thanks again for visiting this site and for commenting.

it's worth mentioning that there is a segment in this new series that is, I believe, damaging to what we teach our kids about Creation. The segment is titled "Tricky Bits with Phil" and is toward the end of Part 2 on the first DVD.

In a nut-shell Phil Vischer makes a statement that says it's okay for Christians to believe that creation happened over millions of years. Because he's the voice of "Bob the Tomato" that my kids know so well as a Christian character, this actually caused one of my kids to have the reaction of "well, he's an expert, maybe that's right." Not to be over-dramatic, but at that moment I felt betrayed.

We watched the first DVD and all of it, minus that segment, was wonderfully put together with tons of Bible history - my kids loved it. We did not, however, watch the 2nd & 3rd DVD's because I was so disappointed at watching diligent creation-teaching seemingly unravel before my eyes. Not all kids would react this way, only one of mine did. But, as I tried to reason my disappointment away in my mind with all the positive and educational elements that surely outweigh that small part ... Gal. 5:9 came to me.

This is a great series. The "professional Sunday school lady" reminds of the the church lady from SNL but without the problems. My kids love it. Grandparents love it and I love it. Glad to have something "healthy" for my children to watch!
